Quiet in the Hospital

Quiet in the hospital

Intravenous infusion pumps beep-beep-beeping, squeaky cart wheels rolling across polished floors, nursing call systems, pagers, hallway conversations, and roommates all make for a busy, noisy place.  Anyone who has ever been hospitalized or sat at a patient’s bedside, knows hospitals are bustling with noise and interruptions. And while the delivery of care undeniably generates commotion, patients still need restful moments to retreat from the stimuli. After all, finding quiet in the hospital, finding distraction in this explosion of stimulation and sound is important for all patients.

Finding an Oasis

So where can you find a virtual quiet corner in the hospital? Where is a space to distract your child and escape the relentless beeping of machines, commotion and hallway chatter?

In fact, electronics like the ones that Mikey’s Way distributes offer an escape into a world beyond the hospital walls. A laptop or tablet coupled with earbuds or headphones provide an oasis from the hospital stimulation.  These electronics offer an outlet of distraction away from the noise. And they help provide diversion from any fear, pain or anxiety your child maybe experiencing.  Here they can find endless entertainment possibilities. Here they can find a vehicle to communicate with friends outside the hospital walls.

Take a Virtual Journey Together

There’s something special about watching a program together with your child. This shared viewing, like a mini adventure together can be comforting for both of you. By using a two-way splitter for headphones or earbuds, you can each watch from the same device while using your own separate headsets.  And while not as cozy as snuggling on your couch at home, it does offer a sense of closeness as you huddle together to watch in unison.

Play Music or Try Journaling

Laptops and tablets can offer a musical retreat for kids as they select songs that resonate with them.  And, listening to music can be very therapeutic and calming. Encourage your child to create a playlist before going to the hospital so they have a good selection ready to go.

And if journaling offers comfort for your child, a laptop provides the perfect tool. Here they can express their feelings, emotions and thoughts through journaling rather than keeping them bottled up.

Stay Connected with Family and Friends

While your child may not be able to be with friends and family in person, laptops offer ways to stay in touch.  Video chat, email, games, and social media provide platforms to remain connected.  Contact with the outside world can make a difference. And knowing how people care about your child, can be an effective remedy for all that your child may be feeling.

NOTE: If you plan on using electronics, remember to bring a charger and extension cord!
