Laptop computers can help kids with cancer smile and Emily knows this all too well. Emily is a delightful eleven-year-old who loves to bake tasty confections for her family and her doctors. When she isn’t baking, she’s busy painting, an activity she enjoys almost as much as baking! Emily is also battling Leukemia for the second time, but a Mikey’s Way laptop helped put a shining smile on her beautiful face.
Emily’s Story
After 2 ½ years of fighting cancer, Emily was looking forward to the finish line. Only a month to go and her treatment would be complete! And then her family received the devastating news, her cancer had returned. Long hours of high-dose chemo treatment would continue to be a part of her life.
Preparing for her upcoming admission, Emily knew that she would be facing long hours at the clinic. Depending on whether she would need blood or not and how long it might take to prepare her chemo, her days at the clinic could be anywhere between 8 and 12 hours long. So, when Emily’s Social Worker suggested that a Mikey’s Way Wish List gift could help her through the long hours in treatment, it was a welcomed surprise. Together they filled out a Wish List request and that very same day, Emily’s laptop computer was in the mail and on its way to her.
“I’m Bored” Dilemma is Over!
“Emily just received her laptop and couldn’t wait to say thank you!” her mom emailed the day it arrived, “She is already downloading games and getting things ready for her upcoming admission. She will be in the hospital getting chemo next week so it came at the perfect time. I know this will solve our “I’m bored” dilemma. Now I just need to make sure the battery can keep up! Shortly thereafter, Emily and her mom headed off to clinic with her new laptop in tow. “I’ve been thinking about you guys today.” Emily’s mom emailed Mikey’s Way, “It’s the first day Emily’s enjoyed her laptop at clinic. She’s been laughing and so relaxed. Your generous gift is so appreciated. I so love to hear her laughing while getting chemo.”
